Weather played a massive part on the long journey to Kenmare Co. Kerry on Friday. All athletes taking part in the 6th Lost Sheep Half IronMan Triathlon had to be registered by 9pm the night before the race. The M50 Car Park, flooding on the N7, oil spills en-route to Limerick etc.. meant the overall journey took around 6.5 – 7Hrs! Perfect preparation for without doubt the hardest race in Ireland, kicking off at 7am the next morning.
Another new winner last night. Gerry McCabe stormed through the course to take a new course record (42.53). Gerry had 1min30secs to spare, largely thanks to his ridiculously fast bike split, over Ross Collins in second place.
Last night saw over 40 brave souls/fecking eejits turn up for the second mini tri. The lake was calm but there was heavy rain and the odd crash of thunder which made for hard and dangerous conditions. Undeterred by the weather was Ruairi Gogarty who won the race, releasing the frustration from his mechanical problems in Castlewellan. Henry O'Neill took second place and chased hard for the win. Ciaran Hughes just pipped Sean Mallon off the podium by 5 seconds, posting the fastest run time on the night.
