I was reasonably active growing up but I was never mad into sport. I used to dodge the odd P.E class by going to do a few extra art classes😊. A bit of 5-a-side football and the odd cycle was as good as it got………how things have changed. I starting doing a little running in 2011 and with a lot of encouragement from Anthony Trainor I done my first 10k, and that was me hooked!!
When and why did you start triathlon?
Anthony had already his first Crooked lake tri under his belt and I remember him asking me would I be on for doing Crooked Lake in 2012. My response was “Anthony………I can’t feckin swim”, but in the back of my mind there was an itch to get around that lake. So off i went to John O’Hanlon for swimming lessons, ALOT of lessons. It took me a long time but by Easter 2012 I was making progress, I had to! I had booked my spot in Crooked Lake 😖. l done the CLWF try a tri on the lead up to Crooked Lake and my stand out memory of that day was one of the Mallons telling me to get my breath and try and slow my strock down while i was hanging on to his canoe for dear life!!!! On the day to go before the big race and I was a bag of nerves but I done the swim and got over the line in one piece (just). It was a great feeling achieving that goal.
Favourite Event to Date?
My favourite event so fare is my first full Ironman in Nice. I will never forget crossing that finish line, it was amazing !! I would say it was one of the best days of my life.
This year’s goals?
My main goal for this year is to try and improve on my swim, so I took the plunge and booked into the swim weekend with the Hit The Wall crew. I will do a few more tri’s aswell, kenmare and ballybay are the main two.
Favourite Tri distance?
It probably sounds nuts but I would say full ironman is my favourite distance, the build up to the race and the race itself is something I couldn’t recommend enough! Top Of The Mourns is a great race to, and if u want a race with a more relaxed atmosphere I would go for muckno.
Favourite Tri Discipline?
Out of the 3 disciplines I would say running is my favorite. I’m pretty good at the fourth event too 🍻
What does Newry Triathlon Club mean to you?
I have to say that joining Newry Tri Club was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’ve met some great friends through the club and I’m a lot healthier and fitter. I really enjoy training in the pool and at the track. We have great coach’s great facilities and our top triathletes are going places this year. So up wards and on wards for NTC
