Before triathlon I played gaelic for Saval . Saval’s big new pitch put an end to the football as there was too much room for the young full forwards so I decided to hang up the boots . For the next 4/5 years I played a bit of golf .
When and why did you start triathlon?
On 1st April 2012 my wife called me to say she had booked me into the crooked lake triathlon as I had been talking about it for a couple of years
I started to do a bit of training and went to the lake one Saturday evening for a swim. I only managed 20 m and got out and was sure I wasn’t going to be able to do it . We bumped into John O Neill and he told me about the try-a-tri that was happening the following morning. John talked me into going along, so I borrowed a bike and off I went .
I swam the 250m doggy paddle , not putting my head in the water once , but managed to complete the course and enjoyed it
Favourite Event to Date?
The Causeway Coast triathlon is my favourite event with one of my highlights of last year being my trip to Kilkee for HOTW with Big Engine Barry Convery. He showed me how it should be done !
What’s your goals for this year?
My main goal for this year is to improve the cycling. I’ve raced cyclocross this winter and have done some open bike racing which will hopefully pay off this season .
Favourite Tri Distance?
I don’t really have a favourite and that’s the thing I enjoy most about triathlon , the variety and putting the 3 disciplines together .
What does Newry Triathlon Club mean to you?
The club is a great way of meeting people who are doing similar training plans and when you meet the Newry tri members on the day of an event there is always plenty of craic and encouragement . There is no age barrier in triathlon and all abilities can compete at your own level which is great
