I have never considered myself very sporty. I swam in a few swimming galas at school & spent my teenage summer years cycling from Bryansford to Newcastle to swim in the open water Rock Pool, but mostly I was more involved with music. After uni i did a few spin & body pump classes as well as running a bit but nothing too serious.
When and why did you start triathlon?
After my 2nd baby was born in 2013 I heard about the Camlough lake water festivals swim from Rostrevor to Warrenpoint. I went down to see it and holding my 12 wk old baby in my arms I thought ‘I want to do that next year’. So my personal challenge was set. I made a few enquiries about adult swim clubs and was pointed in the right direction towards NTC Wednesday night swimming. At this point I had no intention of doing a triathlon! My brother Finbar & I joined together in September 2013 and by the following May we were out swimming in Camlough lake. I was running a bit and thought I’d have a crack at the aquathons. All the while NTC members Neil McDonald, Damian Brennan, Caitriona Courtney & of course Finbar were gently encouraging me to buy a bike…
I completed Rostrevor to Warrenpoint swim in July 2014 for the first time & loved it, so I did a few other competitive open water swims. I bought my bike mid August and completed Castlewellan triathlon- my first one at the end of August. I enjoyed it and was delighted not to have fallen off the bike, but thought with a bit of work I could do better…and so the training began!
Oliver Harkin then started coaching our swim sessions and really helped me to focus on how I could improve. In 2015 I completed 6 sprint & 2 Olympic triathlons as well as our team relay triathlon in Loughgall with Barry, Maciej and Ciara. What a great wee day that was!! It’s amazing how you learn something new with each & every race.
Favourite Event to Date?
Newry City Triathlon 2015. It was an amazing race with a great local atmosphere.
This year’s goals?
Baby number 3 is due in July so that puts me out for a season…or 2. I’m hoping I’ll be back in 2017 if I can get any training done with 3 young children!
Favourite Tri distance?
Sprint distance. I’ve only done 2 Olympic- TOTM & Belfast titanic. I feel my biggest achievement was completing TOTM.
Favourite Tri Discipline?
Definitely swimming. I love the open water.
What does Newry Triathlon Club mean to you?
I am very proud to be a member of NTC and am delighted to race wearing our team colours. What a group of positive, encouraging and fun loving people! There’s always plenty of craic at training and before and after races. Even if you think you can’t do a triathlon and can only do 1 discipline, NTC will welcome you & encourage you to take you further than you ever imagined!
