I was never really a sporty person over the years but found myself getting into fitness around my mid twenties. I took an interest in running and madly decided to sign up to Berlin marathon in 2012 when I literally couldn’t run the length of myself! My friend Benny Smyth took me out running……poor Benny was nearly running in reverse I was that slow! I then joined Newry City Runners in March 2012, I will never forget the first club run, it was about three miles and I near died! But I stuck at it and I successfully completed Berlin marathon in September 2012 this was the start of setting myself yearly challenges!
When and why did you start triathlon? I heard about Newry triathlon club from friends I had met through running, they told me about the pool sessions and id always enjoyed swimming so I decided to go along in October 2013. I met some more great people and soon ‘The Rubber Duckies’ were born! This group consisted of me and a bunch of like minded people who were mad for fun and a new challenge, next thing we knew we were doing Crooked Lake Triathlon in 2014!
I’ve since gone on to complete other sprint triathlons, Olympic distance triathlon, long distance open water swimming and ice swimming.
Favourite Event to Date?
I think my first ever triathlon – crooked lake with ‘The Rubber Duckies’ will always be my fondest memory. The team work, fun and giggles we had throughout our training in 2014 is unforgettable and priceless! The sense of achievement after we completed the triathlon was out of this world! A picture of that day is proudly placed on my mantelpiece!
This year’s goals?
I have decided to challenge myself to a half ironman! This is a HUGE challenge and I have a lot of work ahead of me, but my goal is to get over that finish line…..alive…even if I have to crawl!
Favourite Tri distance?
I would have to say sprint distance as its where I’ve had the most fun to date!
Favourite Tri Discipline?
Swimming, I’ve always loved the water, I don’t have the best technique and I’m pretty slow but I love the water! I even don’t mind Oliver Harkin shouting at me in the pool, it’s worth it! 😉 Running is now my least favourite discipline!
What does Newry Triathlon Club mean to you?
Friends, fun and support. The encouragement from other members is second to none, I’ve made life long friends and everything we do is fun! I love how all kinds of people from all walks of life, ages and abilities come together and push each other on!
