WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED IF I WANT TO DO A TRIATHLON?
Swim – Swimming suit/shorts, wetsuit and goggles. (Wetsuits can be hired)
Bike – Any type of bike as long as it’s roadworthy (You can borrow one if you don’t want to buy one)
Shorts, top and trainers
Run – Shorts, top and trainers
I see other competitors with special shoes on their bikes; do I have to have those on my bike?
No you don’t, it is not essential to have proper cycle shoes with special pedals at all, if you are not used to them they can seem tricky at first. My advice is, don’t worry, there are 100’s of people taking part in our events who just have pedals on their bike.
I see other competitors wearing tri-suits; do I need one?
No you don’t. A tri-suit can be worn for the whole triathlon i.e. you can swim, bike and run in one, however, most first timers opt for utilising what they already have so complete the swim in a costume/trunks and then change into shorts & T-shirt or similar for the bike and run sections. Whatever you choose to wear for the bike/run will be left with your bike & helmet at bike transition.
What are the distances?
The distances vary depending on which event/venue you choose.
IS THERE A SPECIFIC DIET TO TRAIN FOR THIS?
Ideally you want to eat less of the bad stuff and more of the good stuff.
Less Sugar and more proteins and healthy carbs and up to 2 litres of water a day.
HOW FAR DO I NEED TO BE ABLE TO SWIM/CYCLE/RUN TO START?
You should be able to swim at least one length of a 25m pool, cycle for 15/20 min and walk 30 minutes (you can progress to walk/run or run)
If you don’t have a bike yet you could consider a spinning class.
As an NTC member you can avail of beginner training plans and coached sessions to help you prepare and improve all 3 disciplines.

A wetsuit can be hired from as little as one month with NO obligation to buy.
You can borrow a bike or buy a pre – owned one.
Clothing – most first timers utilise what they already have (Tops, shorts, trainers etc)
